Stomp

I recently saw this post on Stomp and I really felt like I needed to say something about this ridiculous website. For those of you who don't live in Singapore or know anything about Stomp, it's basically a website where people post ridiculous things that they see people do.

First of all, those people who are taking pictures of people eating on the train, littering in public etc, you are invading that person's/peoples' privacy. You have no right to go around taking pictures of people you don't know, sticking your nose in other people's business and then have the audacity to post it on the Internet for the whole world to see. It is not your problem if someone is doing something illegal. You are not the police and you are not the government so let them handle it if they get caught. If you do work for the police or have a career in this matter, you have no right to post it on this ridiculously dumb site.

Secondly, I think it's really sad that people have the need or want to look out for these things and post them on Stomp to get attention. Mind your own business and get on with your own life because, frankly, majority of the things that people do and are posted on Stomp do not interfere with your life whatsoever. On the other hand, if there is a rapist or a robber going around harming people then, yes, by all means post it. I am not encourage public humiliation but it's important to raise awareness about these things to prevent them from happening to other people.

There is no place on the Internet for these things. If you are one of those people who are posting about a Singaporean in NS uniform who is making his maid carry his bag or posting about a girl paying for the meal instead of the guy paying and calling it ridiculous, then you need to reevaluate your priorities and respect, not only to others but also to yourself. If you feel like it's so important to post these ridiculous situations then you are just showing everyone on the Internet that you have little value for what's really important in life.

We have come to live in a society where being internet famous and having so many followers and likes on pictures and comments is the greatest thing that can happen to a teenager/young adult. I am aware that this post is contradicting seeing as I am so interested in people posting such irrelevant things. This post is ONLY to support the rights of every human being, not only in Singapore but the whole world. It's come to a point where even I am paranoid of doing certain things because I might end up on this website. There have been many occasions where I had to force myself not take a sip of water because someone might take my picture and say it's illegal to drink on the train, even in a situation where I am unwell and dehydrated and SHOULD drink water for my health. Tell me, is this the kind of society we want to create for future generations?

As humans, we should show some more compassion and humility. Why must we share the bad things that happen? Why can't we share kindness and love? Doing that is not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of a strong character, one who can help support others and turn their day around. It really pains me to see how people find enjoyment and entertainment when they read/see these things.

I know it's impossible to live in a world that's 100% peaceful because, let's face it, we don't all see things the same way but every little bit helps. So for those who are reading this, please, think twice before you share something that criticizes what someone else is doing. Let it slide because if what they're doing is really wrong then they'll get what's coming to them, it's called karma.
